Before Sowing the Wind and Reaping the Storm COP28

This week we had a week full of heavy rain, strong winds, traffic and suffering.

Climate change is felt seriously in our country, where we experience four seasons with different beauty and pleasure, as in the rest of the world.

Scorching heat, droughts, untimely rains, floods, strong winds that shatter windows and blow off roofs, weather that does not cool down, heat that never comes, and springs that cannot be experienced are all the effects of climate change.

Many reasons such as carbon emissions, greenhouse gas effects, development of green areas, failure to protect water resources, and non-implementation of urban policies; Sources that feed climate change and its bad effects. On the other hand, smart urbanization, which is a way of life and management, works hard to reduce these bad effects and protect the world.

But how?

The most important resource of smart cities is data. By collecting this data accurately and objectively, processing it correctly and producing policies; The aim is to facilitate life and sustainability. For these purposes, governments in smart cities direct people to public transportation before an adverse weather event obtained from meteorological data. In fact, they either make transportation free or encourage purpose public transportation by reducing tolls. Otherwise, it would not be possible to prevent everyone from getting in the car and creating traffic when it is raining. Of course, for this to happen, the public transportation network and control must be very good. When it becomes a smart city, it is possible to implement more efficient ones with artificial intelligence-supported systems. However, in order to do this, you must be processing the data. Let’s not forget that data is everything.

In smart cities, not only transportation but also control of falling rain is important. Systems; It ensures that some of the rainwater falling on streets and avenues and flowing from roofs to pavements goes to underground sources, some to the seas, and some to water resources. By processing the data coming from the system created and managed in permeable and sponge city approaches, sharing rates are changed and the impact is reduced while contributing to sustainability. All of this is done in a smart city. Ponds and floods created by rainwater flowing like a stream from the pavements are prevented. If there is a situation to the contrary, there is either no system or there is an error or negligence in the system.

Although electricity is generated from wind power in such systems, the operation of the turbines is suspended in extremely windy situations. The ratio of more wind and more electricity does not work here. It should also be emphasized that typhoon certification is valid for  that will operate in such strong winds.

Smart city governments follow many issues such as air values, waste control, access to safe food, and protection of areas, and think about how to protect the city and its residents from bad effects in the future. It does not ignore the fact that climate change is disrupting business and trade, undermining the economy, and changing lives.

COP 28

Climate change; which affects everything from geopolitics to economy and migration, is among the world’s most important problems. The world has worked for many years, especially in combating climate change.

The United Nations 2023 Climate Change Conference COP28, of which our country is a part and contributes greatly, is being held in Dubai.

It is called COP28 because it is the 28th Conference of the COP (Conference of the Parties) series, the first of which was held in 1995. At this conference, which will last between 30 November and 12 December, countries will present their work on climate change policies. Public and private sector representatives put the products and systems they have developed into use. Panels with valuable speakers will continue to take precautions, shed light on the future, and contribute to an inclusive and sustainable world.

While world leaders attended the conference, our country also participated at the highest level, especially President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. First Lady Emine Erdoğan, who works especially on climate change and sustainability issues, also attended the conference. The “GLOBAL COMMITMENT TO ZERO WASTE” was also opened for signature online at the conference to ensure individual participation in the Global Zero Waste Movement, which was initiated from Turkey under the leadership of Mrs. Emine Erdoğan and became a world movement.

You can also visit the website https://zerowastecommitment.com and sign the declaration of good faith. At the end of this, you can get your online certificate. I signed and received my certificate.

Many studies are being carried out on a global and national scale regarding the sustainability of the world, and measures are being taken. However, as both local governments and residents, we need to support these efforts and implement the measures taken, starting from our homes. Let’s not forget that an approach in which green areas are destroyed, water is not saved, and resources are not protected is nothing but sowing wind.

Before sowing the wind and reaping the storm, it is necessary to make and implement local action plans against climate change. In particular, awareness-raising and education activities need to start from the families and kindergarten level and continue upwards. This approach is very important in terms of its impact from local to general. For this reason, it would be useful to underline once again that it is necessary to create smart cities, and smart local governments before the upcoming 2024 local government elections.

It should not be forgotten: that smart governments bring smart cities, and smart cities bring smart lives!
